Both Ubuntu and Inkscape have had big user contributions with these 2 things.

Another idea would be to have regional mini FUDs (and change the name from FUD).  For example a yearly mini FUD in the Rocky states rotating between Denver, Vegas, SLC, and Boise would be great.</description>
