Fedora People Rule!

I was visiting the Fedora People website when I ran across a post by Thorsten Leemhuis.

The content of the post was a quick way to set up notifications using libnotify when someone either shouts your name or says your nick in irssi. So I thought I’d give it a try. His is an alteration to the original found here.

After about 10 minutes of effort and a little bit of tweaking, I now have a script that will notify me every time someone says my name in irssi. It was really easy to setup. His had one little bug which I’ve fixed, so the new script has been posted below.

Essentially, you need two scripts, the remote fnotify, which needs to be loaded into irssi, and the local irssi-script script, which should be loaded when you login. I recommend the ~/.bashrc file. Refer to the original article for helpful details.

Once you’ve got the scripts downloaded. Take the remote fnotify script and rename it to fnotify.pl and place it in your remote ~/.irssi/scripts directory

$ mv fnotify ~/.irssi/scripts/fnotify.pl

Then, inside irssi, go ahead and run the following three commands:

/unload perl
/load perl
/script load fnotify.pl

If successful, a message similar to this will appear in your irssi control window:

21:20 -!- Irssi: Loaded script fnotify

If any other errors appear when running the /load and /unload operations, it should be okay to continue.

Once this is working, its time to go ahead and start the irssi-script obtained previously.

$ ./irssi-script

Once this happens, get someone to say your name in irssi. Once they have done so, you should get messages that looks similar to this in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop:

ping-script-cool.png

This worked pretty well for me. A few things could work better but aren’t too bad. I currently have no way of running the local irssi-script as a service or on login without my ~/.bashrc hanging. I’ll have to look further into it before I have a solution.

I hope this is useful for you as it was for me.

Cheers,

Herlo

PS - As a quick aside; 15 minutes or so into my research, I also noticed another script at the bottom in the comments that was supposed to be able to do it without the extra startup script. When I tried it, I was getting failures within irssi –something about dbus not working properly.

Utah Open Source Conference 2007 - Call for Papers

Hi all.

As the founder of the Utah Open Source Conference and one of its biggest proponents.  I just wanted to mention that if you hadn’t already seen the post from the Utah Open Source Planet, you will have now.

I am looking forwared to reading all of the outlines coming in over the next month.  Big things are afoot and much will happen in the coming days.  We anticipate a good load of submissions so get yours in early.

Lots of fun stuff will be presented we are sure, and choosing the presenters will be a lot of fun and I am sure looking forward to reviewing many outlines.

If you have anything, anything you want to talk about that relates even a little bit to Open Source in Utah, please submit it today.  You only have until the end of April to do so.

Cheers,

Herlo

End of Summer BBQ

Hi all,

It’s actually been a while since I’ve posted anything here and I thought I’d better let anyone listening know about the annual BBQ Otis and I hold down at our house in Springville. Last year, we had quite a good time, approximately 70 people showed up from around the neighborhood, family and friends.

This year will be bigger and better! We’re including a movie (family approved) at 9pm, along with additional bbq options. Check out the info here:

http://clint.herlo.org/bbq2006web.jpg

If you’ve not been down this way, I highly recommend spending a couple hours enjoying the nice new grass we’ve planted as well as some of the good eats that will be available. If last year was any indication, this year will be bigger and better. Hope to see any/all of you there.

Cheers,

Herlo

My T60p is here!!!

After only three days of waiting, and it passing through Hong Kong, Alaska and Louisville to Utah, my T60p is here.

I started playing with it last night, its been so much fun.  Here’s a couple things I’ve enjoyed so far….

ThinkVantage Recovery Diskettes - 7 total just in case I wanna restore that ol’ winders xp I got with it…

Bluetooth - Connected it to my Palm, it’s so beautiful!!

There is so much more I plan to do with it, including installing XEN and several OSes to go with it.

Updates will abound.

Am I a Hotel Snob, or am I Justified? You Decide!!

So recently I went on a trip to New Mexico for work. You know, the normal ’spend a week in a good hotel’ type week.

I have never before stayed in a La Quinta Inn (for work) and was a little skeptical, but figured it might be a good place to stay. Boy was I wrong!!

Well, first things first, I landed at the NM Airport, rented my car and headed up toward the hotel. Because I hadn’t been there before, I had the rental car agent help me with directions. I do this regularly and usually it provides a direct, albeit sometimes interesting, ride to the hotel. This ride was a little different, in that it wasn’t direct, but it sure was interesting, in a downright slum kind of way. That’s right, my directions took me directly through the slum of downtown Albuquerque, and sadly, my hotel was right in the middle of the ghetto!!
Strike 1, I thought to myself, scary area.

After I arrived at the hotel, I walked in and checked in with the clerk. I received my key, hmm, interesting I thought, a bit out of date, but it’ll do.

Checking in went well, and I was directed to my room at the rear of the hotel. As I walked up to my room, I came upon this:

Nasty stain in front of my doorway...
Nice! Did someone feel ill one evening? And if so, didn’t the housekeeping staff notice the stain? What’s the deal?

Strike 2, Unkempt hallway at the hotel.

So I got into my room, and sure it was okay. It smelled a bit of smoke and disinfectant spray, the A/C sort of worked and the internet worked okay as well, so La Quinta won there. But with my room, I am not yet done. Here’s my bathroom:

Soon after getting into my room, I got ready to settle in for the evening, and as is customary (when I don’t have a fridge in the room) I headed down to get some ice to keep some drinks cool overnight. When I returned, I realized I had forgotten my key, and so I headed back to the front desk to get another key, which as I found out, they didn’t have. Instead, they had a master key, which of course, they wouldn’t lend me because I wasn’t staff, so I waited patiently while the very flamboyant desk clerk finished his conversation with his boyfriend (actually the conversation was with a hotel “guest”), and then we returned to my room.

He, however, when we arrived, we did not need the key after all. As I realized it later, I had not slammed my door. This was apparently required to shut the doors properly, and since I had not done this, the clerk pushed gently on my door and it opened. One strike for me for not checking first, one strike (3 for those who are keeping score at home) for La Quinta for not telling me to slam the door if I wanted it secured properly.

On day two, it wasn’t any better. I thought it would be nice to go down for a swim at the “pool”. I headed down to see what the hours where and I was confronted with a sign that said “Closed, waiting for state inspection”. Wow, I said, this gets better and better. After investigating a little further, I took this picture of the pool: (Strike 4!)

And on day three, I headed down to get some ice. Look what I found. Yappy dogs. Don’t get me wrong, I am not an animal hater, but what kind of ‘hotel’ (and I use that very loosely) lets people keep their dogs in cages outside their room. (I forgot how many strikes I am at!)

Oh, and it grew!! Nasty, nasty stain!!!

You decide!! Am I a hotel snob?

UPHPU Meeting is Tonight! And I Am Going.

Tonight is the very first time I have ever been to the Utah PHP User’s Group meeting, and I am really excited.

The topic seems really cool; PHP, AJAX and Eclipse. I have never used Eclipse before so that will be cool, as I have heard its a cool tool.

One of the guys from the group wanted to go, but his car apparently broke down this last week, so I am giving him a ride and hopefully we will have a good chat on the way.

I am way excited.

Cheers,

Herlo
